More RealID Stuff
Jul 18th
More news on the RealID fiasco. Blizzard has posted an FAQ regarding the new system. Here is a portion of that:
Q: Are there any plans to change the in-game Real ID system so that players will have the option to display an assigned user name instead of their real names?
A: The Real ID system is designed to help real-life friends and family who decide to use it keep in touch with each other across Blizzard games, and our goal in using real names is to ensure that players will be able to maintain long-term, meaningful relationships on the service for years to come. One way it helps make that happen is by eliminating the need to remember who, for example, “Thrall123″ really is when you see him or her pop up on your friends list again after months — or years — of being offline. Ultimately, we think this is the best way to ensure players who use Real ID are able stay connected with the people they enjoy playing with most in the long-term, and we don’t currently have any plans to change the system so it can be used with character names or alternate handles instead. That said, Battle.net is a living, breathing service that we will continue to evolve over time as we evaluate how players are using it and identify new ways to improve the experience.
I wonder how much “street cred” Blizzard has lost with World of Warcraft account holders? How many fewer newbs will be pwned, because these newbs no longer play World of Warcraft? I guess only time will tell if RealID makes Blizzard say “WoW, we really f*$#ed up”…Was that clever? I hope.
Blizzard Ditches Real ID for WoW Cheats Users
Jul 13th
It seems that Blizzard has caved to the pressure, and will no longer require the use of real life names on their forums. Twelve year old boys that use WoW cheats or bot WoW were in a panic. All of these young boys were in fear that they would no longer be able to anonymously trash and harass other players behind the veil of the world wide web. Thank goodness for them, twelve year old boys are good at organizing for a cause, when that cause threatens their ability to be macho in a virtual setting. Now these WoW leveling guides reading punks, get what they want. I guess Blizzard worried that they would tell their mothers and then their mom’s would collectively cancel half the subscriptions that Blizzard has, just to please a bunch of spoiled sons. I think losing these players might not have been a bad thing for the game(not money-wise), because these are probably the majority of players using World of Warcraft cheats and WoW bots. Maybe Blizzard will think of a new solution to keep their forums more peaceful and “user friendly”. Until then, we will hide behind the constitution? or the internet? Maybe all of the mature players should pull a “Kevin Smith” on these boys, and pay a visit to their homes. What would Blizzard do if they had mass assault and battery on their hands?
World of Warcraft Going Free To Play?
Jul 5th
Tom Chilton, the lead designer on World of Warcraft was asked by PC gamer about the possibility of WoW ever going free to play. Here are a couple of quotes he had concerning the topic:
“I can definitely imagine that being the case with World of Warcraft. If another game comes along and blows us away it may not make sense for us to have a subscription fee. Or even further down the line, when we have another MMO out.”
“We’re not spending a lot of time thinking about it. It’s not something that’s a reality for us in the near future.”
In other words, don’t expect it to happen anytime soon…unless a new game comes along and takes a big bite out of their player base or Blizzard puts out a second MMO. With Cataclysm coming out soon, and WoW still going strong, I don’t see this in the near future. I think the only reason PC Gamer was tempted to ask the question was because LOTRO and DDO went free to play recently. Don’t get me wrong..I would love to see it become free, I just have a hard time seeing them give something away that people are clearly willing to pay for.
